Corolla, North Carolina

Corolla is an unincorporated community located in Poplar Branch township, Currituck County, North Carolina along the northern Outer Banks. It has a permanent population of approximately 500 people; during the summer vacation season, the population surges into the thousands. Corolla is home to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, one of the seven North Carolina coastal lighthouses. Corolla is home to about 119 feral Banker horses.

Currituck Banks North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve

Currituck Banks North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve is a component site of the North Carolina National Estuarine Research Reserve on the Currituck Banks, north of Corolla, North Carolina. The reserve is an example of a low-salinity estuarine ecosystem, and contains a variety of habitats, including beach, sand dunes, grasslands, shrub thicket, maritime forest, brackish and freshwater marshes, tidal flats, and subtidal soft bottoms.

Monkey Island, North Carolina

Monkey Island is a remote, natural island located in Currituck Sound, North Carolina and is part of the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. It is named for the Pamunkey nation that once inhabited the area. The island was once the site of the Monkey Island Hunting Club, which remains standing today. Approximately half of the island is forested and has long supported a large colony of wading birds. The island is often visited by deer that swim from at least a mile away.

Currituck County, North Carolina

Currituck County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina with its county seat at Currituck. The county is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area based around Norfolk, Virginia. Currituck was formed in 1668 as a precinct of Albemarle County. The name is "traditionally said to be an Indian word for wild geese; Coratank. " It is in the northeastern section of the State and is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Currituck Sound, Camden County, Dare County and the state of Virginia.

Currituck Sound

Currituck Sound is a protected inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, located in northeastern part of North Carolina and extreme southeastern Virginia. Thirty miles N-S and 3–8 miles wide, this shallow, island-filled sound is separated from the ocean by the Currituck Banks Peninsula, part of the Outer Banks. On the NE, it extends to Back Bay in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
