Its county seat is Ironton and is named for James Lawrence, the naval officer famous for the line "do not give up the ship". Lawrence County is part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 287,702.

Hanging Rock Ponds

The Hanging Rock Ponds are a set of ponds near Hanging Rock, a village along the Ohio River in western Lawrence County, Ohio, United States. The ponds are the result of strip mining, or surface mining for iron ore or coal during the 1960s and 1970s. Hanging Rock Ponds have a total of 51 ponds, scattered throughout a 5,000 acre (20 km²) national reserve. This area is part of the Wayne National Forest, Ohio's only national forest.

WIRO is a commercial radio station serving the Ironton, Ohio, Flatwoods, Kentucky, Ashland, Kentucky and Huntington, West Virginia areas. The station currently is affiliated with Fox Sports Radio, beginning on April 6, 2009. Previously it repeated WVHU in Huntington. The station's antenna system uses a single tower that results in an omnidirectional signal pattern. According to the Antenna Structure Registration database, the tower is 62.4 m tall.
