Gallipolis, Ohio

Gallipolis is a chartered village in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Gallia County. The municipality is located in Southeast Ohio on the Ohio River. The population was 3,641 at the 2010 census. When the population dropped below 5,000, Gallipolis became a village, but continues to operate under its existing city charter.

Gallipolis Island

Gallipolis Island is an island on the Ohio River along the coast of Gallipolis, Ohio in Mason County, West Virginia, United States. While within the boundaries of West Virginia, Gallipolis Island belonged to the city of Gallipolis, Ohio until the city sold the island in 2004 to the United States Department of Fish and Wildlife Service for its inclusion into the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge.

WXBW

WXBW (Your Big Buck Country 101-5) is an FM radio station located in Gallipolis, Ohio. The station has an additional booster station, WXBW-FM1 located in Huntington, West Virginia. The stations are licensed to Fifth Avenue Broadcasting Company, Inc. Previously a classic rock radio station, former-owner Connoisseur Media flipped 101.5 The River (WRYV) to Variety Hits as 101.5 Bob FM at approximately 10:00 p.m. on August 26, 2008. At this time, the station became known as WXBW.

Silver Memorial Bridge

The Silver Memorial Bridge is a cantilever bridge which spans the Ohio River between Gallipolis, Ohio and Henderson, West Virginia. The bridge was completed in 1969, shortly after the Silver Bridge disaster, although it is located about 1 mile (1.6 km) downstream (south) of the original. The design of the bridge is much more proven than the ill fated eyebar chain suspension bridge, which collapsed in 1967.

Battle of Point Pleasant

The Battle of Point Pleasant — known as the Battle of Kanawha in some older accounts — was the only major action of Dunmore's War. It was fought on October 10, 1774, primarily between Virginia militia and American Indians from the Shawnee and Mingo tribes. Along the Ohio River near modern Point Pleasant, West Virginia, American Indians under the Shawnee Chief Cornstalk attacked Virginia militia under Colonel Andrew Lewis, hoping to halt Lewis's advance into the Ohio Country.
