Great Salt Plains Lake

Great Salt Plains Lake is a reservoir located within the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma in the United States named because of the salt flats in the area and for the Salt Fork Arkansas River, which is dammed to form the lake. The lake was created in 1940 along with Ralstin Island which is home to heron, egret and ibis. Great Salt Plains Lake expands across 8,690 acres, has 41 miles of waterfront and is shallow and salty.

Kegelman Air Force Auxiliary Field is located near the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma, approximately 10 miles east of Cherokee, Oklahoma. The installation is located an elevation of 1,202 feet and has an ICAO code of KCKA and IATA and FAA codes of CKA. The field has one runway, a fire station, personnel offices and a NEXRAD tower, which is used for weather forecasting for both the military and civilian entities. It is located on 1,066 acres .

Alfalfa County is a county located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of 2010, the population is 5,642. Its county seat is Cherokee. Alfalfa County was formed in 1907 from Woods County. The county is named after William H. "Alfalfa Bill" Murray, the president of the Oklahoma Constitutional Convention and ninth governor of Oklahoma.
