The name Muncy comes from the Munsee Indians who once lived in the area. The population was 2,663 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Williamsport, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. Muncy is located on the West Branch Susquehanna River, just south of the confluence of Muncy Creek with the river.

State Correctional Institution – Muncy
State Correctional Institution – Muncy is a Pennsylvania Department of Corrections prison for women in Clinton Township, Lycoming County, near Muncy. SCI Muncy, a close security prison, has Pennsylvania's death row for women. In 1920 the Muncy Industrial Home, a training school for imprisoned women between 16 and 30, opened. In 1953 the industrial home became a part of the Bureau of Correction. The industrial home is now SCI Muncy.
