Charleroi, Pennsylvania

Charleroi is a borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, along the Monongahela River, 21 miles south of Pittsburgh. Charleroi was settled in 1890 and incorporated in 1891. The population in 1900 stood at 5,930; in 1910, 9,615; in 1920, 11,516, and in 1940, 10,784. The population was 4,871 at the 2000 census and the 2010 census recorded a population of 4,120. There has been a large-scale cessation of industrial activities in the region.

North Charleroi, Pennsylvania

North Charleroi is a borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,409 at the 2000 census. The city is also known as "Lock 4". Previously Lock and Dam #4 was located on this side of the Monongahela River, and the place had this name. Lock and Dam #4 was later re-located further upstream on the other side of the "Charleroi Monessen Bridge". The name was changed but most residents still refer to the city as "Lock 4".
