Shanksville is a borough in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, United States, with a population of 245, as of the 2000 census. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area and is approximately 60 miles (approximately 80 miles driving) southeast from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Shanksville came to international attention during the September 11 attacks when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in adjacent Stonycreek Township.

United Airlines Flight 93

United Airlines Flight 93 was a passenger flight which was hijacked by four al-Qaeda terrorists on September 11, 2001, as part of the September 11 attacks. It crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania near Shanksville, during an attempt by some of the passengers to regain control, killing all 44 people aboard including the four hijackers. No one on the ground was injured.

Indian Lake, Pennsylvania

Indian Lake is a borough in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 394 at the 2010 census, down from 450 in 2000. Indian Lake is home to Indian Lake Golf Club, which opened in 1974, and was the first to be designed by Arnold Palmer, Northwinds Golf Course (public), Indian Lake Resort (fine dining, banquet, and swimming), Indian Lake Marina, and the new James W. McIntyre Hiking and Biking Trail.

Indian Lake Airport

Indian Lake Airport is a privately owned, closed airport located in Indian Lake, Pennsylvania, United States. The airport was constructed in 1966 to serve the new, growing community of Indian Lake. In its original configuration, it had a single paved northeast-southwest runway (4/22) measuring 3,000 feet . By 1975, the northwest-southeast runway, 14/32, had been added. The original runway was abandoned by 1993, and the entire airport was closed in 1999.
