Battle of Lenud's Ferry

The Battle of Lenud's Ferry was a battle of the American Revolutionary War that was fought on May 6, 1780 in present-day Berkeley County, South Carolina. The Loyalist British Legion, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, surprised and scattered a company of Patriot militia at Lenud's Ferry, a crossing point on the Santee River, north of which lies present-day Georgetown County.

Gumville, South Carolina

Gumville is an unincorporated community in Berkeley County, South Carolina, United States. It is located approximately 2 miles west of Jamestown on US 17A. Gumville was made famous as the birthplace of L. Mendel Rivers, the longtime Representative of the 1st congressional district. When queried about where he was born by reporters, Rivers would reply "I'm from Gumville. It's near Hell Hole Swamp. If you don't know where it is, look it up.

Santee River

The Santee River is a river in South Carolina in the United States, 143 miles long. The Santee and its tributaries provide the principal drainage and navigation for the central coastal plain of South Carolina, emptying into the Atlantic Ocean approximately 440 miles from its farthest headwater on the Catawba River in North Carolina. Much of upper river is impounded as the expansive, horn-shaped Lake Marion reservoir, formed by the 8-mile -long Santee Dam.
