Union County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It is part of the Sioux City, IA–NE–SD Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,399. Its county seat is Elk Point. Originally named Cole County, the named was changed to Union because of Civil War sentiment. DakotaDome is a 10,000-seat multi-purpose stadium on North Dakota Street in Vermillion, South Dakota. Opened in 1979 for a cost of $8.2 million, it is home to the University of South Dakota Coyotes for numerous athletic events, including football, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, men's and women's swimming and diving, and track. The DakotaDome hosts other events throughout the year, including the South Dakota high school football championships each November.
