Battle of Suffolk (Hill's Point)

The Battle of Suffolk at Hill's Point, also known as the Battle of Fort Huger, took place from April 11 to May 4, 1863, in Suffolk, Virginia, as part of Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet's Tidewater operations during the American Civil War. On April 19, a detachment of the 8th Connecticut and the 89th New York landed on Hill's Point at the confluence of the forks of the Nansemond River.

Lakeland High School (Virginia)

Lakeland High School is a public secondary school in Suffolk, Virginia, United States. It opened in September 1990 and originally consisted of students from the four former high schools of John F. Kennedy High School, Forest Glen High School, John Yeates High School, and Suffolk High School. Lakeland opened its doors to approximately 1800 students. The student population swelled to nearly 2600 students in 2003, and in 2004 a new high school, King's Fork, opened.

Zion Christian Church, Suffolk, Virginia

Zion Christian Church was founded just after the American Civil War. The African American families in the community erected a bush shelter, on the present site. Rev. Robert Holland, the white pastor of Holy Neck Christian, preached once a month. Eventually, A log cabin was erected and Rev. Justin Copeland was called to be the first pastor. In 1867, the church, now named Zion Christian Church, was chartered. The present edifice was erected in 1907 and has been renovated many times.
