Big Woods State Forest

Big Woods State Forest is a state forest in Sussex County, Virginia. It is the first state forest property to be located in southeast Virginia. The Department of Forestry purchased the property in 2010. Work is underway to improve several interior roads and then open them to the public in time for the general firearms season. Hunting is permitted on the property.

Sussex I State Prison

Sussex I State Prison is a prison of the Virginia Department of Corrections located in unincorporated Sussex County, Virginia, near Waverly. It is adjacent to Sussex II State Prison, which lies to its southeast, just across Musselwhite Drive. The prison, a maximum security facility, opened in May 1998. It serves as an intake facility. It includes the state death row for men. On August 3, 1998, the male death row moved from Mecklenburg Correctional Center to its current location.
