Eltham, Virginia

Eltham is a small unincorporated community in New Kent County, Virginia, United States. Located along State Routes 30, 33, and 249 in modern times, it is located slightly west of the town of West Point. It was named for Eltham Plantation, across from West Point on the nearby Pamunkey River. Eltham Plantation was owned by William Burwell Bassett and his wife, Anna Maria Dandridge, the sister of Martha Washington.

Mattaponi River

The Mattaponi River is a 103-mile-long tributary of the York River estuary in eastern Virginia in the United States. It rises as four streams in Spotsylvania County, each of which is given a shorter piece of the Mattaponi's name: The Mat River and the Ta River join in Spotsylvania County to form the Matta River; The Po River and the Ni River join in Caroline County to form the Poni River; The Matta River and the Poni River join in Caroline County to form the Mattaponi River.

Battle of Eltham's Landing

The Battle of Eltham's Landing, also known as the Battle of Barhamsville, or West Point, took place on May 7, 1862, in New Kent County, Virginia, as part of the Peninsula Campaign of the American Civil War. Brig. Gen. William B. Franklin's Union division landed at Eltham's Landing and was attacked by two brigades of Brig. Gen. G. W. Smith's command, reacting to the threat to the Confederate army's trains on the Barhamsville Road.
