The Federal Correctional Institution, Gilmer (FCI Gilmer) is a medium-security United States federal prison for male inmates in West Virginia. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. An adjacent satellite prison camp houses minimum-security male inmates. FCI Gilmer is located in central West Virginia, 85 miles northeast of Charleston and 150 miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Gilmer County, West Virginia

Gilmer County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,693. Its county seat is Glenville. Gilmer County was formed in 1845 from parts of Lewis and Kanawha Counties, and named for Thomas Walker Gilmer, Governor of Virginia from 1840 to 1841. Gilmer was later a representative in the United States Congress and Secretary of the Navy in President John Tyler's cabinet. Cedar Creek State Park offers camping, hunting, fishing and hiking.

Sand Fork, West Virginia

Sand Fork is a town in Gilmer County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 159 at the 2010 census. It is located along the Little Kanawha River, at the mouth of the Sand Fork. Sand Fork was incorporated in 1903 as Layopolis, named for William R. Lay, an employee of the Eureka Pipe Line Company, which operated in oil fields in the area. Prior to 1983, the town was known as Layopolis, while its post office was known as Sand Fork.
