Magic Island (West Virginia)

Magic Island is an island (now connected to the mainland) in the Kanawha River near its confluence with the Elk River in Charleston, West Virginia. Kanawha Boulevard separates Magic Island from Charleston's West Side neighborhood. It serves as a public park for the city. The island gained its name due to the rise and fall of the river level in the Kanawha, which caused the island to slip underwater, as if by "magic".

Charleston Civic Center

The Charleston Civic Center is a municipal complex located in the downtown area of Charleston, West Virginia. Originally completed in 1959 at the cost of $2.5 million, the Charleston Civic Center has undergone numerous renovations and expansions. The Charleston Civic Center currently consists of three main components: the Civic Center Coliseum, the Little Theater, and the Charleston Convention Center, also referred to as the Grand Hall.

Charleston, West Virginia

Charleston is the capital and largest city of the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha Rivers in Kanawha County. As of the 2010 Census, it had a population of 51,400, while its metropolitan area had 304,214. New definitions from February 28, 2013 placed the population at 240,000. The metropolitan area is the second-largest in the State of West Virginia behind the Huntington-Ashland-Ironton metropolitan area.

George Washington High School (Charleston, West Virginia)

George Washington High School is a public high school in Charleston, West Virginia, USA. GWHS opened in 1965 to accommodate students in South Hills and Loudendale ostensibly because Charleston High School was overcrowded. Prior to this time students in Charleston were divided between Charleston and Stonewall Jackson high schools. With the advent of desegregation, the wealthy South Hills neighborhood carved out a new, virtually all-white, school district from the Charleston district.
