Logan County was formed in 1824 from parts of Giles, Tazewell, Cabell, and Kanawha counties. It is named for Chief Logan, famous Native American chief of the Mingo tribe. The name of the town reportedly derives from the last syllable of the surname of Ulysses Hinchman, who was a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates from Logan County between 1866 and 1869.
