Wolf River (Fox River)
The Wolf River, 225 miles long, is one of the two National Scenic Rivers in Wisconsin, along with the St. Croix River. The scenic portion is 24 miles long. It rises in the north woods of the state, with the northernmost fork stemming from Pine Lake in Forest County. The river then flows south through Langlade and Menominee counties, where whitewater rafting is well known.

The community is located at the north side of (Big) Lake Butte des Morts on the former route of Wisconsin Highway 110. The name means "hill of the dead" in French. Butte des Mortes uses the ZIP code 54927. The Austin Grignon Hotel, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located within the community.

Big Lake Butte des Morts is an 8,800-acre lake located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and is part of the Winnebago Pool (also known as the Winnebago System). The lake is fed by the Fox River in the southwest and the Wolf River draining from Lake Winneconne in the northwest, and drains via the Fox River southeast into Lake Winnebago. The lake is also part of the Butte des Morts region in Winnebago County, Wisconsin.
