The unincorporated community of Detroit Harbor is located on the island. It is the largest in a group of islands that includes Plum, Detroit, Hog, Pilot, and Rock Islands.

Hog Island is a bird sanctuary located off the eastern shore of Washington Island in Door County, Wisconsin. Since 1913, this sanctuary has served as a habitat for many different types of birds including geese and gulls.
