An Khe District

An Khe is a town (thị xã) of Gia Lai Province in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam. As of 2003 the district had a population of 63,118. The district covers an area of 199 km². The district capital lies at An Khe. Located on the main highway, QL-19 between Qui Nhon on the coast and Pleiku in the Central Highlands, An Khe was of strategic significance during the Vietnam War. From mid-1965 to 1968, the American 1st Cavalry Division was based there. The 1st Cav saw ongoing action in the war.
