Tumut is at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains and is referred to as the gateway to the Snowy Mountains Scheme. Tumut Shire is administered from offices located in Tumut. Tumut is approximately 410 kilometres south-west of Sydney and 525 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. Tumut is home to a number of historic buildings.
