Lake Macquarie (New South Wales)

Lake Macquarie is Australia's largest coastal salt water lake, covering an area of 110 square kilometres in the Hunter Region of New South Wales with most of the City of Lake Macquarie's residents living near its shores. It is connected to the Tasman Sea by a short channel. Lake Macquarie is twice as large as Sydney Harbour and is the largest permanent salt water lake in the southern hemisphere.

Rathmines, New South Wales

Rathmines is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia on the western shore of Lake Macquarie between the towns of Toronto and Morisset. Rathmines was first settled by Europeans at around 1840. It was named after the town of Rathmines in Ireland. Orchards, vineyards and cattle were the early industries. The first school opened in 1941. A RAAF base operated in Rathmines from 1939 to 1963.
