State Dockyard
The State Dockyard at Dykes Point, Newcastle was built by the New South Wales Government from 1938 until 1941 and opened in 1942 during World War II. The dockyard was constructed using much of the plant and buildings from the former Walsh Island Dockyard and Engineering Works which had ceased operations in 1933. The dockyard launched its first vessel in July 1943.

It offers regular services to Sydney on the Newcastle and Central Coast line and to Maitland, Scone and Dungog on the Hunter line. Newcastle railway station is three hours' travel from Sydney's Central Station. It is a terminating and departing station and situated at the end of the Newcastle branch line.

Hunter Street, Newcastle
Hunter Street in Newcastle is the major shopping street in the Newcastle central business district. The street is a paved pedestrian mall between Wolfe and Perkins Streets. In the early nineteenth-century, Hunter Street east of Brown Street formed the northern boundary of the Dangar Grid. Since the 1970s, the retail strip has fallen into serious decline, partly as a result of the development of suburban shopping centres and a trend to move away from inner-city dwellings and business.
