Latrobe, Tasmania

Latrobe is a town in northern Tasmania, Australia on the Mersey River. It is 8 km south-east of Devonport on the Bass Highway. It is the main centre of the Latrobe Council. At the 2006 census, Latrobe had a population of 2,843. The area was first settled by B. B. Thomas in 1826 and, in 1861, the settlement was named for Charles Joseph Latrobe (1801-1875), the administrator of the colony of Tasmania. La Trobe Post Office opened on 31 August 1860 and was renamed Latrobe in 1873.

Kentish Council

The Kentish Council is a local government area of Tasmania. It is located in the north-west of the state, slightly inland from the coast. The area was explored by the surveyor Nathaniel Kentish in 1842 who was given the task of finding a route from Deloraine through to Tasmania's north west coast. Kentish's last name has remained as the name of the area. The major towns of the municipality are Sheffield, Railton and Wilmot.

Meander Valley Council

The Meander Valley Council is a local government area of Tasmania. As its name suggests, it covers a large area of the Meander River in the central north of the state, which flows through the municipality's major centre of Deloraine. The council from the merger of Westbury and Deloraine municipalities in 1993. Smaller towns in the area include Carrick, Hagley, Hadspen, Mole Creek, Meander, Deloraine and Westbury.
