Adelaide Hills Council was established in 1997 by the amalgamation of four smaller district councils (East Torrens, Gumeracha, Onkaparinga and Stirling). It is in the hills east of Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, and extends from the South Para Reservoir in the north to the Mount Bold Reservoir in the south. The Johnston family of Oakbank founded Woodside in the 1850s, primarily to improve their brewery business. The town was a useful traffic hub linking Oakbank, Lobethal and Charleston.
