Pimba is a small settlement lying on the transcontinental railway line in the Australian state of South Australia. It lies at the junction of the Stuart Highway to Alice Springs and the road to Woomera, Roxby Downs and Andamooka . It is 480 km from Adelaide. There is an iconic roadhouse, named "Spud's Roadhouse", which sells fuel and general shop items and meals and has accommodation. At the 2006 census, Pimba had a population of 50.

Woomera, South Australia
Woomera 'village' (as it is has been historically referred to) is a small, and remote, Australian Defence Force (ADF) base servicing the RAAF Woomera Test Range. The 'base' is unusual in that it is open public access. Between 1947 and 1982, it was a completely 'closed' facility. Like the RAAF's Point Cook base in Victoria, Woomera has a significant history.

Woomera Immigration Reception and Processing Centre
The (former) Woomera Immigration Reception and Processing Centre (IRPC) was an Australian immigration detention facility near the village of Woomera in South Australia. Unauthorised arrivals, which had exceeded the capacity of other detention facilities. It was originally intended to hold 400 people, however at its peak in April 2000 it had nearly 1,500 detainees.

Joint Defense Facility Nurrungar
Joint Defence Facility Nurrungar (JDFN), located on the edge of Island Lagoon, approximately 15 km south of Woomera, South Australia was a facility operated jointly by the Australian Department of Defence and the United States Air Force from 1969 through 1999. Its official area of emphasis was space-based surveillance, in particular the early detection of missile launches and nuclear detonations using U.S. Defense Support Program satellites in geostationary orbits.

Island Lagoon Tracking Station
The Island Lagoon Tracking Station (Deep Space Station 41) was the first deep space station to be established outside of the United States, near Woomera, South Australia in November 1960. This area was chosen as the Australian government was working with the government of the United Kingdom on rocket and satellite research close by. The tracking station began as a trailer installation, and was operational in time for the International Geophysical Year of 1957.
