Rossarden is an old mining town in central Tasmania, located 19 km from Avoca. Located in a valley below Stacks Bluff (1527 m), it is an old tin mining town, the mine closed in 1982. Prior to this Rossarden was one of Australia's major tin producing towns. At the 2006 census, Rossarden and the surrounding area had a population of 172. The post office opened on 20 November 1933. Avoca is situated on the banks of the South Esk River and was first settled in the 1830s. It was originally named St. Paul's Plains by the explorers who surveyed the area in 1833. The area was officially settled in 1834 as a farming, coal and tin mining village.
