Interesting facts about this location

Banool railway station

Banool was a stopping place and railway station located on the now dismantled Victorian Railways Colac to Beech Forest narrow gauge line. Today all that remains is the original Railway Station signage. A portion of the original railway reservation is now a rail trail and visitors to the Great Otway National Park are now able to cycle along the path. The best and most original section of the line is between Gellibrand and Banool.

Beech Forest, Victoria

Beech Forest is a town in Victoria, Australia. The area of Beech Forest is largely used for potato farming. The town was named after the many myrtle beech trees of the area. Beech Forest Post Office opened on 10 May 1890 and closed in 1994. The town had a railway station on the Crowes railway line from 1902 until 1962. Much of the route of the old railway has been converted to the Old Beechy Rail Trail, via which cyclists and walkers can travel 45km between Beech Forest and Colac.

The Shire of Otway was a local government area about 190 kilometres southwest of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of 1,906.94 square kilometres, and existed from 1919 until 1994.

Beech Forest railway station

Beech Forest railway station is a closed and demolished railway station in the town of Beech Forest on the former Crowes railway line. There is currently a park and toilets at the station site. Remains of the station can be seen in the cutting for the former loop at the Down end of the yard which surrounds the disused tennis court and the two Departmental Residences which are still standing and occupied.

Hopetoun Falls

Hopetoun Falls is located five kilometres south of Beech Forest, Victoria, Australia. Much attention has been given to preserving the natural characteristics of Hopetoun Falls while allowing ample access for visitors. The falls have a large set of well-built and maintained stairs that lead down a natural patio to a viewing platform very close to the foot of the waterfall. Hopetoun Falls plunges 30 m in a rectangular shape. Many visitors come every year to look at its natural beauty.
