The City of Ararat was a local government area about 200 kilometres west-northwest of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. It existed from 1858 until 1994. Headquartered in Ararat, Victoria, the council had jurisdiction over an area of 19.09 square kilometres and by 1992 a population of 8,070 people. It was surrounded by the separate and largely rural Shire of Ararat.

Ararat is a small city in south-west Victoria, Australia, about 205 kilometres west of Melbourne, on the Western Highway on the eastern slopes of the Ararat Hills and Cemetery Creek valley between Victoria's Western District and the Wimmera. Its urban population according to the 2011 census was 7,024. It is the largest settlement in the Rural City of Ararat local government area and is the administrative centre.

Rural City of Ararat

The Rural City of Ararat is the local government area in south-west Victoria, Australia. The region has an area of 4,230 square kilometres and is centred around the city of Ararat. The population of the region is approximately 11100, according to the 2001 census. It was formed in 1994 from the merger of the City of Ararat, Shire of Ararat and parts of the Shire of Moyne, Shire of Northern Grampians and Shire of Southern Grampians.
