Lake King, Western Australia

Lake King is a town located in the Eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, 464 kilometres from Perth along State Route 107 between Wagin and Ravensthorpe. Lake King is named after a nearby lake which in turn was named after the Surveyor General of Western Australia, Henry Sanford King, by Marshall Fox, the surveyor from Narrogin. Settlers began arriving in the area in 1928 shortly after the area was surveyed and land was released.

Banksia xylothemelia

Banksia xylothemelia is a sprawling woody shrub of the Proteaceae family endemic to southern Western Australia, one of the many species commonly known as dryandras and until recently called Dryandra xylothemelia. To date it is almost unknown in cultivation.

Varley, Western Australia

Varley is a small town located between Hyden and Lake King in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. The area surrounding the town was opened for agricultural purposes in the 1930s and by 1938 the local progress association began campaigning to have the townsite gazetted. The move was approved in 1938 and the townsite was gazetted in 1939. The town is named after the nearby Lake Varley and Varley Rock which were both named by the explorer Frank Hann in 1901.
