Langemark German war cemetery

The German war cemetery of Langemark (also spelt 'Langemarck') is near the village of Langemark, part of the municipality of Langemark-Poelkapelle, in the Belgian province of West Flanders. More than 44,000 soldiers are buried here. The village was the scene of the first gas attacks by the German army, marking the beginning of the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915.

Langemark

Langemark is a village in the Belgian province of West-Flanders, and a "deelgemeente" of the municipality of Langemark-Poelkapelle. The village has about 5000 inhabitants. Besides the village center, there are also two smaller hamlets on the territory, Madonna and Sint-Juliaan.

Battle of Poelcappelle

The Battle of Poelcappelle (9 October 1917) marked the end of the string of highly successful British attacks in late September and early October 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres. Only the supporting attack in the north achieved a substantial advance. On the main front the German defences withstood the limited amount of artillery fire achieved by the British after the attack of 4 October.

Saint Julien Memorial

The St. Julien Memorial is a Canadian war memorial and small commemorative park located in the village of Saint-Julien, Belgium. The memorial commemorates the Canadian First Division's participation in the Second Battle of Ypres of World War I which included the defence against the first poison gas attacks along the Western Front.

Second Battle of Ypres

The Second Battle of Ypres was a First World War battle fought for control of the strategic Flemish town of Ypres in western Belgium in the spring of 1915, following the First Battle of Ypres the previous autumn. It marked the first time that Germany used poison gas on a large scale on the Western Front. Additionally, the battle was the first time that a former colonial force defeated a major European power on European soil, in the Battle of St. Julien-Kitcheners' Wood.
