Testerep (or Ter Streep) was an island along the Belgian coast. Fishing villages were scattered about, among them were Oostende and Westende. Oostende being the far east, Westende the far west, and Middelkerke (literally 'middle-church') the middle of the island. Later, the sea level dropped and the island became connected to the Belgian coast.

Walraversijde
Walraversijde is an abandoned medieval fishing village on the Belgian coast, near Ostend. It was rediscovered in 1992 in a dune area, near a medieval dyke. Archeological research showed that it had been occupied, in two phases, between 1200 and 1600. Walraversijde has been studied more thoroughly and more systematically than any other medieval fishing community in Europe. The village has been partially reconstructed, and has a museum, Walraversijde Museum, dedicated to the site.

The Battle of Nieuwpoort, between a Dutch army under Maurice of Nassau and Francis Vere and a Spanish army under Albert of Austria, took place on 2 July 1600 near the present-day Belgian city Nieuwpoort.
