Spy, Belgium

Spy is a village in the municipality of Jemeppe-sur-Sambre near Namur, Belgium. Here in 1886, in Betche aux Roches cavern, Maximin Lohest and Marcel de Puydt found two nearly perfect Neanderthal skeletons (man and woman) at the depth of 16 ft. , with numerous implements of the Mousterian type. Fortified Position of Namur

The fortified position of Namur (position fortifiée de Namur) was established by Belgium following World War I to fortify the traditional invasion corridor between Germany and France through Belgium. The position incorporated the fortress ring of Namur, originally designed by Belgian General Henri Alexis Brialmont to deter an invasion of Belgium by France. The old fortifications consisted of nine forts built between 1888 and 1892 on either side of the Meuse, surrounding Namur.

Grotte de Spy

The Grotte de Spy (Cave of Spy) is located near Spy in the municipality of Jemeppe-sur-Sambre, province of Namur, Belgium. It has been classified as Wallonia's Major Heritage by the Walloon Region. It is one of the most important paleolithic sites in Europe, and has undergone many excavations with many recoveries. In 1886 a discovery was made that still represents a capital episode in the history of science.
