It became a municipality in 1997. It is part of the statistical microregion of Salinas and lies 5 km. north of highway BR-251. The distance to Salinas is 56 km. Neighboring municipalities are: Taiobeiras, Berizal, Águas Vermelhas, and Santa Cruz de Salinas.
