Alajuela
Alajuela is the second largest city in Costa Rica after the capital, San José. It is also the capital of the namesake province. Because of its location in the Costa Rican Central Valley, Alajuela is nowadays englobed in the conurbation of Great Metropolitan Area (GAM). The city is the birthplace of Juan Santamaría, the national hero of Costa Rica and the figure who gives the name to the country's main international airport, which is located south of Alajuela downtown.

San Pedro de Poás
San Pedro is the capital city of the canton of Poás in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica. It is also the name of the distrito (district) that includes the city. The district of San Pedro covers an area of 14.64 km², and has a population of 7,497. The city lies at an elevation of 1,148 meters above sea level in the mountains of the Cordillera Central (Central Mountain Range) in Costa Rica.

Poás (canton)
Poás is the eighth canton in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 73.84 square kilometres, and has a population of 26,476 (estimate as of 2003). The capital city of the canton is San Pedro. The elongated canton sits among the ridges and valleys on the southern slope of Poás Volcano. The Río Poás and Río Poasito form its eastern border, while the Río Prendes and Río Tacares limit the canton to the west. Poás Volcano is the canton's northernmost point.
