Luapula River

The Luapula River is a section of Africa's second-longest river, the Congo. It is a transnational river forming for nearly all its length part of the border between Zambia and the DR Congo. It joins Lake Bangweulu to Lake Mweru (shared between the two countries) and gives its name to the Luapula Province of Zambia.

Isokwe

Isokwe is an island on Lake Mweru in Luapula Province, Zambia. Isokwe is occupied, and is 7 kilometres long and up to 2 kilometres wide. It is located about 5 kilometres outside the city of Kashikishi. Isokwe is a narrow, elongated fishing island, which passes to the west into the Luapula swamps of the delta. It is regularly visited by people from Nchelenge by ferry.

Nchelenge

Nchelenge is a town in the Luapula Province of northern Zambia, lying on the south eastern shore of Lake Mweru. It is contiguous with Kashikishi, and they are sometimes referred to as Nchelenge-Kashikishi. Nchelenge is the administrative centre for the Zambian part of Lake Mweru, being the seat of the district government and branches of national agencies, while Kashikishi is the market and fisheries centre. Ferries sail from Nchelenge to Kilwa Island and Isokwe.

Kilwa Island

Kilwa Island is an island on Lake Mweru, Zambia. It was known to Arab and Swahili traders of ivory, copper and slaves who used Kilwa Island on the lake as a base at one time. Kilwa Island was a favorite trading spot for the Chinese because the harbor was deep, so the massive Chinese ships could land directly on the dock. Most of Kilwa's wealth came from traders that came to Kilwa so they could trade with the Chinese.

Kashikishi

Kashikishi is a town on the south-eastern shore of Lake Mweru in the Luapula Province of Zambia. It lies just north of the district headquarters Nchelenge, and close enough for them to be considered twin towns; they are sometimes referred to as Nchelenge-Kashikishi. While Nchelenge is the seat of the district government and branches of national agencies, Kashikishi is the market and fisheries centre.
