Otavalo (city)

Otavalo, capital of Otavalo Canton, is a largely indigenous town in the Imbabura Province of Ecuador. The town has about 90,000 inhabitants and is surrounded by the peaks of Imbabura (4,630 metres), Cotacachi (4,995 metres), and Mojanda volcanoes.

Mojanda

Mojanda is an inactive stratovolcano of the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes in northern Ecuador. A summit caldera, which was produced by an explosive Plinian Eruption that marked the end of Mojanda activity 200,000 years ago, is presently occupied by three crater lakes: Caricocha (the largest), Yanacocha, and Huarmicocha. Having received protected status in 2002, they are a popular tourist destination and are about 20 minutes taxi ride from the largely indigenous town of Otavalo.

Cotacachi Canton

Cotacachi is a canton of Imbabura province of Ecuador in South America. The name also refers to the city which is the seat of that canton, one of Ecuador's leading artisanal manufacturers of leather goods, and to the dormant Volcan Cotacachi which overlooks the canton. The city of Cotacachi holds a UNESCO medal for being free of illiteracy. In 2000 the canton of Cotacachi was declared the first ecological county of South America. The name Cotacachi has many meanings.

1868 Ecuador earthquakes

The 1868 Ecuador earthquakes occurred at 19:30 UTC on August 15 and 06:30 UTC on 16 August 1868. They caused severe damage in the northeastern part of Ecuador and in southwestern Colombia. They had an estimated magnitude of 6.3 and 6.7 and together caused up to 70,000 casualties. The earthquake of 15 August occurred near El Angel, Carchi Province, close to the border with Colombia, while that of August 16 occurred near Ibarra in Imbabura Province.
