Vilcabamba, Ecuador
Vilcabamba is a village in the southern region of Ecuador, in the Loja province, about 45 km from the city of Loja. The etymology of the “Vilcabamba” apparently derives from the Quichua “huilco pamba. ” Huilco denotes the sacred trees, Anadenanthera colubrina, that inhabit the region and pamba is a word meaning “a plain. ” The area has been referred to as the "Playground of the Inca" which refers to its historic use as a retreat for Incan royalty.

It is the "agricultural, farming, and craftsmanship capital of Loja. " Gonzanamá covers 1272 km² at an altitude of 2045 m, with a population of 17,276. The principal town is Gonzanama. Attractions include: Festivals of Buen Suceso Señor and Virgen de el Carmen - celebrated on August 20 and July 16, respectively.
