Interesting facts about this location

Agoyán

The Agoyan is the tallest waterfall of the Ecuadorian Andes. It is located approximately 7 km from the city of Baños. It is formed by the waters of the Pastaza river that plunge 61 meters in a gorge located in the Occidental Cordillera. In 1987, the Ecuadorian government inaugurated the Agoyan hydroelectric plant, which has been part of the country's power grid since then. The plant was built upstream of the waterfall, so as to preserve it.

1949 Ambato earthquake

The 1949 Ambato earthquake was the largest earthquake in the Western Hemisphere in more than five years. On August 5, 1949, it struck Ecuador's Tungurahua Province southeast of its capital, Ambato, and killed 5,050 people. Measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, it originated from a hypocenter 40 km beneath the surface. The nearby villages of Guano, Patate, Pelileo, and Pillaro were destroyed, and the city of Ambato suffered heavy damage.

Tungurahua

Tungurahua, is an active stratovolcano located in the Cordillera Oriental of Ecuador. The volcano gives its name to the province of Tungurahua. Volcanic activity restarted on August 19, 1999, and is ongoing as of 2012, with major eruptions on 16 August 2006, 6 February 2008, 28 May 2010, 4 December 2010 and 26 April 2011, and again in March 2013.
