Zamora River
The Zamora River is a tributary of the Santiago River (Peru) located in the south-east of Ecuador. Historically, it was known to the Spanish as Yaya Mayu, from the river's name among a group of Shuar encountered nearby. The sources of the Zamora River are in the Podocarpus National Park, specifically at the Nudo de Cajanuma. The river then descends towards the city of Loja.

Nambija mine disaster
The Nambija mine disaster was a landslide which occurred in a remote mining settlement in the southeastern part of Ecuador on 9 May 1993. A part of the mountain above the countless mines gave way and buried about 300 people.
