Cuscatlán Department

Cuscatlán is a department of El Salvador, located in the center of the country. With a surface area of 756.19 square kilometres, it is El Salvador's smallest department. It is inhabited by over 200,000 people. Cuscatlán or Cuzcatlán was the name the original inhabitants of the Western part of the country gave to most of the territory that is now El Salvador. In their language it means "land of precious jewels". It was created on 22 May 1835.

1986 San Salvador earthquake

The 1986 San Salvador Earthquake struck El Salvador on October 10, 1986 at 17:49:24 UTC, causing considerable damage to the capital city, San Salvador, and surrounding areas, including neighbouring Honduras and Guatemala. Between 1,000 and 1,500 people are believed to have been killed, and over 10,000 people were injured. 200,000 people were left homeless after the earthquake and a week of minor aftershocks.

Geography of El Salvador

The geography of El Salvador is unique among the nations of Central America. The country borders the North Pacific Ocean to the south and southwest, with Guatemala to the north-northwest and Honduras to the north-northeast. In the southeast, the Golfo de Fonseca separates it from Nicaragua. El Salvador is the smallest Central American country in area and is the only one without a coastline on the Caribbean sea.

Cojutepeque

Cojutepeque is the capital city of El Salvador's Cuscatlán department. It also served as the capital of San Salvador during several years. It also serves as the administrative centre for the surrounding municipality of Cojutepeque. Its population is estimated at 70,000 people with about 85% living in the urban areas of the municipality. The Pan-American Highway connects Cojutepeque with San Salvador 33 km away. Its height is 850 meters above sea level; it enjoys a pleasant climate.
