Aguilares, El Salvador

Aguilares is a municipality in the San Salvador department of El Salvador, located 33 km away from the city of San Salvador. The municipality measures 33.72 km² and as of 2006, had an estimated population of 73,300. Sugar cane cultivation is the major economic activity for the area. The municipality is divided into five administrative divisions, called cantones: Florida, Las Tunas, Pinalitos, Pishishapa, and Los Mangos.

1986 San Salvador earthquake

The 1986 San Salvador Earthquake struck El Salvador on October 10, 1986 at 17:49:24 UTC, causing considerable damage to the capital city, San Salvador, and surrounding areas, including neighbouring Honduras and Guatemala. Between 1,000 and 1,500 people are believed to have been killed, and over 10,000 people were injured. 200,000 people were left homeless after the earthquake and a week of minor aftershocks.

Apopa

Apopa is a municipality in the San Salvador department of El Salvador. Probably the seventh biggest city in El Salvador with a little more than 150,000 people, the city has now collided with Soyapango and San Salvador, making it part of the Great San Salvador Metro (with a 1,900,000 2010 population estimate).
