Gulomahda

Gulomakeda (also spelled Gulomahda) is one of the woredas in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. Its name partly comes from the legendary Queen Makeda, also known as the Queen of Sheba. Part of the Misraqawi Zone, Gulomakeda is bordered on the south by Ganta Afeshum, on the west by the Mehakelegnaw (Central) Zone, on the north by Eritrea, on the east by Irob, and on the southeast by Saesi Tsaedaemba. Towns in Gulomakeda include Sebeya and Zalambessa.

Matara, Eritrea

Matara (or Metera) is an archaeological site in Eritrea. Situated a few kilometers south of Senafe, it was a major city in the Dʿmt and Aksumite kingdoms. Since Eritrean independence, the National Museum of Eritrea has petitioned the Ethiopian government to return artifacts removed from the site. However, the efforts have thus far been rebuffed.

Senafe

Senafe is a market town in southern Eritrea, on the edge of the Ethiopian highlands. The surrounding area is inhabited by the Saho people and the Tigrinya people. Senafe is known for the ruins of Metera (also known as Balaw Kalaw), the monolithic church of Enda-Tradqan, the monastery of Debre Libanos (built in the sixth century and known for its mummies) and for the local stone outcrops.

Keskese

Keskese is the site of an ancient Aksumite ruin in Eritrea, 8 kilometres north of Matara. Dating from around 500 BCE, it is known for its stelae. Some of the latter are inscribed in Ge'ez and up to 14 metres in height. The site was excavated by Daniel Habtemichael in the early 2000s (decade).
