Operation Mallard

Operation Mallard was the codename for an airborne forces operation which was conducted by the British Army on 6 June 1944, as part of the Normandy landings. The mission's objective was to airlift glider infantry of the 6th Airlanding Brigade and divisional troops to reinforce the 6th Airborne Division on the left flank of the British invasion beaches.

Battle of Verrières Ridge

The Battle of Verrières Ridge was a series of engagements fought as part of the Battle of Normandy, in western France, during the Second World War. The main combatants were two Canadian infantry divisions—with additional support from the Canadian 2nd Armoured Brigade—against elements of three German SS Panzer divisions.

Duchy of Normandy

The Duchy of Normandy grew out of various Danish, Norwegian, Hiberno-Norse, Orkney Viking and Anglo-Danish invasions of West Francia in the 9th century. Normandy began in 911 as a fief, probably a county, in the sense that it was held by a count. It was established by the treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte between King Charles III of West Francia and Rollo, leader of the Vikings known as Northmen, or Nortmanni, in Latin.

Odon (river)

The Odon is a river in the Calvados department, in Normandy, northwestern France. It is 47 km long and is a left tributary of the Orne. The river passes through Jurques, Aunay-sur-Odon, Baron-sur-Odon, Bretteville-sur-Odon, Épinay-sur-Odon, Grainville-sur-Odon, Parfouru-sur-Odon, Tournay-sur-Odon and Tourville-sur-Odon.
