Normandy began in 911 as a fief, probably a county, in the sense that it was held by a count. It was established by the treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte between King Charles III of West Francia and Rollo, leader of the Vikings known as Northmen, or Nortmanni, in Latin.
