Battle of Blain

The Battle of Blain, also called the Battle of Messac, was fought on 24 May 843 by the forces of Lambert II of Nantes and Erispoe, prince of Brittany, against Renaud, Frankish Count of Nantes. It arose from Breton resistance to Frankish power within Brittany and disputes over control of the County of Nantes. The defeat of the Franks led to a period of Breton expansionism.

Château de Blain

The Château de Blain is a mediaeval castle constructed in the 13th century and heavily remodelled in the 16th. It formed part of the frontier defences of Brittany along with the towns and castles of Vitré, Fougères, Châteaubriant, Ancenis and Clisson. It is in the commune of Blain in the Loire-Atlantique département of France.

Melleray Abbey

Melleray Abbey (Abbaye de Notre-Dame-de-Melleray) was a Cistercian monastery, founded about the year 1134. It was situated in Brittany, Diocese of Nantes, in La Meilleraye-de-Bretagne in the vicinity of Châteaubriant.

Aéroport du Grand Ouest

The Aéroport du Grand Ouest Project is a planned new airport, to be situated 30 km to the north-west of the French city of Nantes in the commune of Notre-Dame-des-Landes. It is intended that the new airport will replace Nantes Atlantique Airport as the airport for Nantes, but also serve as an international gateway for western France. The €580 million project was approved in February 2008, with construction expected to start in 2014 and an opening date in 2017.
