Battle of Pydna

The Battle of Pydna in 168 BC between Rome and the Macedonian Antigonid dynasty saw the further ascendancy of Rome in the Hellenic/Hellenistic world and the end of the Antigonid line of kings, whose power traced back to Alexander the Great. Paul K. Davis writes that "Pydna marked the final destruction of Alexander’s empire and introduced Roman authority over the Near East."

Vrontou, Pieria

Vrontou is a town of the former Municipality of Dio, which is part of the municipality of Dio-Olympos, in the Pieria regional unit, Central Macedonia, Greece, at an altitude of 120 meters, with 2,081 inhabitants (census 2001). An impressive and spectacular event is the carnival of Vrontou (Καρναβάλι της Βροντούς), that take place every year.

Kastania, Pieria

Kastania is a village in Pieria, Greece. It is part of the municipal unit of Kolindros. Its population as of the 2001 census was 423. It dates from Byzantine times, and Byzantine churches are still in evidence. It is a picturesque mountain village situated at the beginning of a large gorge leading down to a beach. Wealth derives from its surrounding farm land and from shipping.

Haliacmon

The Haliacmon is the longest river in Greece, with a total length of 322 km . Haliacmon is the traditional English name for the river, but many sources cite the formerly official Katharevousa version of the name, Aliákmon. Today, the only official variant is the demotic Aliákmonas. It flows through the Greek regions of West Macedonia and Central Macedonia.

The Vardar or Axios is the longest and major river in the Republic of Macedonia and also a major river of Greece. It is 388 km long, and drains an area of around 25,000 km . The maximum depth of the river is 4 m . The river rises at Vrutok, a few kilometers north of Gostivar in the Republic of Macedonia.
