Naxos

Naxos is a Greek island, the largest island (429 km) in the Cyclades island group in the Aegean. It was the centre of archaic Cycladic culture. The island comprises the two municipalities of Naxos and Drymalia. The largest town and capital of the island is Chora or Naxos City, with 6,533 inhabitants (2001 census). The main villages are Filoti, Apiranthos, Vivlos, Agios Arsenios, Koronos and Glinado. Naxos is a popular tourist destination, with several easily accessible ruins.

Siege of Naxos (499 BC)

The Siege of Naxos (499 BC) was a failed attempt by the Milesian tyrant Aristagoras, operating with support from, and in the name of the Persian Empire of Darius the Great, to conquer the island of Naxos. It was the opening act of the Greco-Persian Wars, which would ultimately last for 50 years. Aristagoras had been approached by exiled Naxian aristocrats, who were seeking to return to their island.

Glynado

Glynado (Γλυνάδο) is a community on the island of Naxos, in the Cyclades, Greece. Its population averages at 509 (2001 census) but increases in the summer months. Glynado's inhabitants mainly subside of farming in the fertile plain below the village, known as Leivadia, but have also ventured into hospitality services given its picturesque location sprawled out on a hill top 8 kilometres from the Island's capital Chora. It belongs to the municipality of Naxos.

Apeiranthos

Apeiranthos or Aperathos is a mountainous village in the island of Naxos. It is located 28 km north-east of the capital of the island, built on the foothill of mountain Fanari, on an altitude between 550 and 650 m. It is a village with a very rich history and folkloric tradition. The similarities of the local dialect and traditions to the mountainous Crete villages has led some historians to the conclusion that Apeiranthos was built by Cretans during the 10th century.

Keramoti is a village in the northeastern part of the island of Naxos in the Cyclades, Greece. Keramoti is part of the municipality of Drymalia. It is linked with a main road that connects the northern part of the island and the town of Naxos. Keramoti is situated in a mountainous area. Keramoti are mainly grasslands and dry rocks and a few trees around the area. Keramoti is located NE of Naxos and 14 km northeast of Chalkio.
