Lake Karla

Lake Karla is a former lake that sits at 60 to 80 m (180 to 240 ft) above sea level making it the only one in the plain of Thessaly. The lake is located at the northern end of the Magnesia regional unit in the Pineios basin, adjacent to Pelion and Maurovouni mountains. On the eastern part of the lake the lies the town of Kanalia.

Larissa National Airport

Larissa Airport Thessaly (Greek: Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Λάρισσας “Θεσσαλία”) was built in 1912. It was the commercial airport of Larissa until 1997 when it closed. It's claimed that it will reopen for commercial flights in 2013. Currently the airport is being used only by military aircraft. The longest runway (08/26) is temporarily closed. The runways do not have an ILS.

Larissa

Larissa is the capital and biggest city of the Thessaly region of Greece and capital of the Larissa regional unit. It is a principal agricultural centre and a national transportation hub, linked by road and rail with the port of Volos, the city of Thessaloniki and Athens. Larissa, within its municipality, has 162,591 inhabitants, while the regional unit of Larissa reached a population of 284,325 (in 2011).

Battle of Callinicus

The Battle of Callinicus was fought in 171 BC between Macedon and Rome to the city "Kalliniko", near Larissa. The Macedonians were led by their king, Perseus of Macedon, while the Roman force was led by Consul Publius Licinius Crassus. The Macedonians were victorious. The battle is notable for the prevalent role of cavalry and light infantry as a combined 'task force'. Livy describes this battle at 42.58-60, and according to his account, the heavy infantry were not engaged in this battle.
