Îles de Los

Îles de Los (English: Loos Islands) are an island group lying off Conakry in Guinea. There are three main islands: Tamara (Fortoba), Kassa and Roume, while Coraille, Blanche and Cabris are smaller islands to the south. The islands have been inhabited for a long time. The British took possession of them, then handed them to France in 1904 in exchange for France relinquishing fishing rights in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Conakry National Museum

Conakry National Museum or Guinea National Museum is the national museum of Guinea, situated in the capital, Conakry. It was established shortly after independence in 1960. It contains displays of the ethnography and prehistory of Guinea, and has a considerable collection of masks and fetishes and a range of art. The museum is located beside the Ignace Deen Hospital.

Cathedrale Sainte-Marie

The Cathédrale Sainte-Marie is an important place of Christian worship in Conakry, Guinea. The yellow and red building is of considerable architectural interest. Monseigneur Raymond René Lérouge laid the foundation stone of the Cathedral in 1928. The Cathedral was built in the 1930s, and has impressive architecture, with Orthodox design elements. The Palais Presidentiel is behind the cathedral. Opposite is the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Conakry

Conakry is the capital and largest city of Guinea. Conakry is a port city on the Atlantic Ocean and serves as the economic, financial and cultural centre of Guinea with a 2009 population of 1,548,500. Originally situated on Tombo Island, one of the Îles de Los, it has since spread up the neighboring Kaloum Peninsula. The population of Conakry is difficult to ascertain, although the U.S. Bureau of African Affairs has estimated it at 2 million.
