La Paz, Honduras

La Paz is the capital city of the La Paz Department of Honduras. The town, founded in 1792 and named La Paz since 1861, has a population of 16,947. The town is 750m above sea level on the Comayagua River near the Cordillera de Montecillos in an area that has mountainous terrain with thick jungle cover. The town's economy is based on henequen, coffee, cattle, timber processing, tanning, distilling and some mining.

La Paz is one of the 18 departments into which the Central American nation of Honduras is divided. The departmental capital is the city of La Paz. The department covers a total surface area of 2,331 km² and, in 2005, had an estimated population of 173,731.

Cane, La Paz

Cane is a municipality in the Honduran department of La Paz. The population of Cane is not exact, but is estimated to be around 4,000. The current mayor is Jose Tejeda, who is very popular among the community, as he has donated millions of US dollars to the creation of a lush central park stocked with trash cans, benches, and a taco bar. Tejeda is also in the process of paving the roads of Cane, which were originally all dirt.
