It is also known as Jagannath Puri after the 11th century Jagannath Temple located in the city. Puri is a holy city of the Hindus as a part of the Char Dham pilgrimages. According to Hindu teachings, a pilgrimage of the temples of India is not considered complete without a journey to Puri.

Puri Zila School (Oriya: ପୁରୀ ଜ଼ିଲ୍ଲା ସ୍କୁଲ୍) is a government educational institution imparting education in high school level and one of the oldest school in Odisha, India. The school was established in 1853 in the holy city of Puri and was originally located in Kundheibenta Sahi. Puri Zila School moved to another building which later converted to Samanta Chandra Sekhar College, Puri. Puri Zila School moved to its current location on Station Road in 1958.
